Each employer must determine, by visual inspection to the extent possible, that compressed gas cylinders under its control are in safe condition. Visual and other inspections follow the Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR parts 171 to 179 and 14 CFR part 103); where those do not apply, they follow Compressed Gas Association Pamphlets C-6-1968 and C-8-1962, incorporated by reference through 1910.6. In-plant handling, storage and use of all compressed gases in cylinders, portable tanks, rail tank cars or motor vehicle cargo tanks must follow CGA Pamphlet P-1-1965. Compressed gas cylinders, portable tanks and cargo tanks must have pressure relief devices installed and maintained in accordance with CGA Pamphlets S-1.1-1963 with the 1965 addenda and S-1.2-1963.
