Section 4: the media sanitization programme (policy, scope, decision framework, performance, assurance, documentation, roles) – NIST SP 800-88 Rev 2

NIST SP 800-88 Rev 2 4.5: Assure sanitization by inspecting results and deciding adequacy; repeat with a different technique or a stronger method when unacceptable, rechecking reusability

What does 4.5 require?

Following ISO/IEC 27040, checking whether sanitization outcomes were adequate and effective is a core programme activity: the results of the attempted technique are inspected (verification) and a decision on their adequacy is made (validation), the Validate step in the decision flow. Expected and appropriate outcomes are accepted; otherwise sanitization is repeated, and because a previous technique may have left the media unusable or inoperable, repeated sanitization rechecks the media's reusability.
