Section 4: the media sanitization programme (policy, scope, decision framework, performance, assurance, documentation, roles) – NIST SP 800-88 Rev 2

NIST SP 800-88 Rev 2 4.3.3-4.3.4: Decide on reuse (destroy is simplest when media will not be reused) and account for who controls the media: maintenance under contract or on-site supervision stays under organisational control, warranty exchanges and other non-returned media do not, and legal rules may treat loss of unsanitized media as a breach

What does 4.3.3-4.3.4 require?

A key decision is whether the media is intended for reuse (internal transfer, donation, refurbishment); where it is not, because of damage or otherwise, destruction is the simplest and most cost-effective method. Decisions are also shaped by who has control of and access to the media, which must be considered whenever media leave organisational control, for example on return from a lease, donation, resale or recycling. ISM handed securely to a maintenance provider under a contract that provides for confidentiality, or maintained on site under the organisation's supervision, remain under organisational control; ISM exchanged for warranty, rebate or other purposes and not returned are outside it. Legal, regulatory or statutory requirements for certain sensitive data may treat loss of control of unsanitized ISM as a data breach.
