Section 4: the media sanitization programme (policy, scope, decision framework, performance, assurance, documentation, roles) – NIST SP 800-88 Rev 2

NIST SP 800-88 Rev 2 4.3.2: Security categorisation set early under FIPS 199, SP 800-60 or CNSSI 1253, revisited at least every three years or on significant change, and internal confidentiality labels assigned to uncategorised information such as hard copy

What does 4.3.2 require?

Early in the life cycle the system is categorised using FIPS 199, SP 800-60 or CNSSI 1253, including the confidentiality category (low, moderate, high). The categorisation is reconsidered no less often than every three years, and sooner if the system changes significantly, and revalidated through the system's life, with any needed changes to the confidentiality category made, after which the system owner designs a sanitization process that protects the system's information adequately. Information not tied to a categorised system, often hard copy such as memoranda, white papers, presentations, disciplinary letters, salary negotiations or strategy minutes, is labelled with the organisation's internal confidentiality levels and assigned a sanitization type from the guideline.
