Once the requirement is established, sanitization is performed according to the selected method (clear, purge or destroy) in compliance with IEEE 2883 or another standard the organisation's policy accepts, such as NSA/CSS Policy 6-22 or Policy Manual 9-12. Where media type and method allow several techniques, the one giving the most confidentiality protection is used, and Section 3.2 is consulted when CE is chosen. While performing the sanitization, the results and outcomes, the information needed for the record and other relevant information are captured. Proper initial configuration of each ISM makes sanitization more effective, so those performing it check manufacturer guidance and DISA STIGs for recommended settings; a sanitized ISM will often not resemble a factory-fresh drive and may need further configuration before reuse.
