Learners are helped to focus on present, direct experience with intentional awareness and attention, accepting experience as an emergent process of change, so that habitual, automatic responses do not pre-empt learning. Kolb draws on meditative and socio-cognitive mindfulness and on Gendlin's focusing, and derives two practices: anchoring in here-and-now experience free of preconception and bias (for example through attention to the senses and calm breathing), and intentionally guiding one's learning by paying attention to how one moves through the phases of the cycle, replacing an autopilot learning style with conscious choice.
