Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle
Assessment, development and deliberate learning – Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle

Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle M1: Holistic, authentic assessment across the four learning modes

What does M1 require?

Assessment asks learners to demonstrate knowledge and skill in a real-life context and evaluates their integrated functioning across all four modes (affective, perceptual, cognitive and behavioural), not only the abstract dimension that lecture-based examinations test. Kolb and Kolb's Personal Application Assignment is an essay or journal rubric built on the cycle in which learners record an experience, look again at what they thought and felt about it from a new angle, form concepts that explain it, and create action plans from what they learned, with a scoring system for grading.
