Learning relationships, connections between people that promote movement through the learning spiral and inspire further learning, are deliberately developed: teachers, mentors, advisers and peers can help or harm learning. Kolb describes growth-fostering relationships as marked by mutual empathy and empowerment, built through interactions of compassion, respect and support that increase in quality and frequency; those supporting others' learning can ask questions that draw out different learning modes. The metacognitive strategy is to invest in relationships that produce growth and contain those that undermine learning identity, bearing in mind that praising people for being smart can reinforce a fixed identity.
