ITIL 4 5.1.7: Portfolio management

What does 5.1.7 require?

Makes sure the organization holds the right combination of programmes and projects, and of products and services, to carry out its strategy while staying within the money and resources it has, through coordinated strategic decisions that balance change against business as usual. It provides: a systematic framework for defining and delivering the portfolios; products and services that are defined and tied to agreed outcomes; assessment and ranking of proposals against constraints, commitments and strategy; strategic appraisal of investments by value, cost, risk, resources, interdependencies and impact; analysis and tracking of investments; monitoring of how the portfolio performs overall; and review of progress, outcomes, cost, risk, benefits and strategic contribution. It keeps the product and service portfolio (pipeline, catalogue and retired services), the project portfolio and, together with relationship management, the customer portfolio, and it can operate in an Agile way. It informs planning, finds improvement opportunities and ranks them, ranks opportunities and demand against strategy, risk and resources, and keeps the other activities focused on value.
