The laboratory shall apply suitable methods and procedures to all its activities and, where suitable, to evaluating measurement uncertainty and analysing data statistically. All methods, procedures and supporting documents shall be kept current and easy for staff to obtain. The most recent valid version of a method shall be used unless that is not possible or not appropriate, with extra detail added where needed so it is applied consistently. Where the customer does not name a method, the laboratory shall choose a suitable one (preferably one published in a standard, by a reputable technical body, in scientific literature or by the equipment manufacturer; methods the laboratory has developed or modified are allowed) and tell the customer. Before bringing a method into use, the laboratory needs to confirm it can perform the method properly, keep records of that verification, and verify again if the issuing body revises the method. Method development shall be planned, given to competent people with enough resources, reviewed from time to time against what the customer needs, and changes to the plan approved. Departures from a method are allowed only where they are documented, justified on technical grounds, authorized and accepted by the customer.
