Clause 9 Performance evaluation – ISO 56002

ISO 56002 9.1.1: General

What does 9.1.1 require?

The organization should decide what is to be monitored and measured, and which innovation performance indicators it will use; which tools and methods of monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation will give valid results; when monitoring and measurement take place; when their results are analysed and evaluated; and who is responsible. Indicators may be qualitative or quantitative, and a balanced set can mix three kinds. Input indicators: number of ideas and of initiatives, the potential of ideas to create value, new knowledge sources, insights, resources and competence. Throughput indicators: how fast experimentation, learning and development proceed, how many people take part or are trained, how well collaboration works, the tools and methods taken up, time to market and time to profit, engagement and brand awareness. Output indicators: how many ideas are implemented, the return on money invested in innovation, growth in revenue and profit, market share, ease of use, how quickly solutions are adopted, satisfaction of users, diffusion, renewal and transformation, benefits to society and sustainability, savings in cost, how fast the organization learns, IP, new users and image. Indicators may be set for the whole system, for a portfolio or for a single initiative, and the organization may benchmark itself against others.
