The organization should set an approach to managing collaboration inside and outside the organization, intended to make it easier to share and reach knowledge, competence, resources and other intellectual assets. It should consider the innovation strategy and objectives together with the capabilities, resources, knowledge and competencies it already holds; the variety of experience, disciplines, competencies and viewpoints; the different approaches, methods, rules and agreements used when collaborating externally; intellectual property questions; reviewing regularly whether collaborations remain strategically relevant and aligned; and how much mutual respect, openness and trust between the parties matter. Through collaboration, inside the organization and with users, customers, partners, providers, academia, associations and parties beyond its own value networks, the organization can find user needs and challenges, share ideas and know-how, reach infrastructure, portfolios, markets and users, obtain competencies and resources, and carry out innovation operations jointly.
