The organization ought to define the scope of its innovation management system by settling its innovation intent and deciding where the system's boundaries lie and to what it applies, taking account of the issues and areas of opportunity from 4.1, the needs, expectations and requirements from 4.2, and how the system interacts with other management systems. The innovation intent can sketch scenarios of what might become possible in areas of opportunity despite uncertainty. The description of scope should consider which offerings, processes, structures, functions, partners, collaborations, locations and time periods fall inside it or outside it. The scope should be revisited and changed as needed, and should exist as documented information.
