Analysis examines data to bring out relationships, patterns and trends, because what monitoring and measurement produce rarely speaks for itself. The data should be processed to arrive at the value of each indicator, which typically involves statistical techniques such as averages and variability, rates of occurrence, or graphs and charts that show trends. Analysis can also yield qualitative information by applying logical methods to monitoring outputs, for example turning the complaints and facts raised at health and safety meetings into the hidden causes of incidents and into ideas for improving. The standard's example is a foundry whose consultant measures airborne cadmium and whose own analysis checks whether exposure is within acceptable limits and improving.
