Regular monitoring and measuring, as appropriate, should establish the status of the organization's systems, processes and activities, and the processes critical to reaching intended results, which need monitoring and measuring, should be identified. Following the guidance in ISO 45001:2018 Clause A.9, monitoring is continual checking, supervising, observing or status determination to spot departures from required or expected performance, applied to the management system, processes or controls through interviews, document review and observation of work; measurement assigns numbers to objects or events, underpins quantitative data and is typical of safety programme evaluation and health surveillance, for example calibrated or verified equipment measuring exposure to a hazardous substance or calculating a safe distance from a hazard. Monitoring and measuring equipment should be verified or calibrated, wherever possible against measurement standards that are traceable to national or international ones.
