A proven in use argument can give credit for a candidate (an item or element already in use) against the safety requirements of the target application, replacing specified safety activities, where the candidate's use, its modifications and its field data meet the clause's conditions; part 2 6.4.5.3 refers tailoring on this basis to clause 14. This sits in clause 14, whose stated aim, per the SGS quotation, is to guide the argument that an existing item or element has proved itself in use, an alternative route to compliance when field data exist.
