With the patient's best interests in mind, a process shall be in place for dealing with samples that are compromised through wrong identification, instability caused by delay, storage or handling at the wrong temperature, unsuitable containers, or too little volume. If, after weighing patient safety, a compromised sample that is clinically critical or cannot be replaced is accepted, the final report shall describe the problem and, where relevant, advise care when interpreting the results affected.
