Procedures shall govern how primary samples are collected and handled, and the information shall be available to the people who collect them. Any departure from collection procedures shall be recorded, and the laboratory shall judge, record and communicate what accepting or refusing the sample would mean in risk and in outcome for the patient. The laboratory shall review from time to time the sample volumes, collection devices and preservatives it specifies, so that samples are neither too small nor excessive and the analyte is properly preserved.
