Guidance: top management carries a central responsibility for raising awareness that encourages behaviour in support of the policy commitments, including awareness of the environmental values the organization holds and what they add to its strategy. People under the organization's control should be encouraged to improve environmental performance, to help achieve the intended outcomes and accept the importance of the objectives they are responsible for, and should be made aware of the policy and the commitment to it, the importance of conforming to the system, their contribution to its effectiveness, the benefits of improved performance, their responsibilities and accountabilities, the significant aspects and impacts of their work, the risks and opportunities relating to their work where applicable, and the consequences of departing from the system's requirements including compliance obligations. Methods include internal communication, signs and banners, campaigns, training, education and mentoring.
