ISO 14004:2016 6.2.4: Performance indicators

Guidance: the organization should set indicators of environmental performance whose results are objective, verifiable and reproducible, and which fit its activities, products and services, agree with its policy, and are workable, affordable and technically achievable, to track progress toward objectives and support evaluation and improvement of environmental performance. Environmental condition indicators, management performance indicators and operational performance indicators appropriate to the significant aspects can be used (ISO 14031 and ISO/TS 14033 give guidance). Examples include raw material and energy used, emissions such as carbon dioxide, waste per unit of product, material and energy efficiency, incidents and accidents, recycling rates, vehicle kilometres per unit, specific pollutants, investment in protection, prosecutions, habitat set aside, persons trained and budget spent on low-emission technology.
