Ireland Guidelines for the Responsible Use of AI in the Public Service (2025) 4.6a: Deploy AI in an environmentally conscious way, mitigating its environmental harm

What does 4.6a require?

The body uses AI in as environmentally conscious a way as possible, consistent with the Government's Climate Action Plan commitment to cut carbon emissions, and mitigates environmental harm linked to an AI system as far as it can, for example by reducing energy used in model training, re-using pre-trained models where possible and favouring data centres powered by renewable resources where suitable.
