Documented problem-solving processes set out approaches suited to problems of different kinds and sizes (for example field failures, issues in current manufacturing, audit findings and the development of new products). They cover containment, interim actions and related control; root cause analysis, recording the method used, the analysis and the results; systemic corrective action that considers effects on similar products and processes; checking that corrective action worked, plus (added by Sanctioned Interpretation 20) prevention of recurrence; and review and, where needed, update of relevant documented information such as the PFMEA and control plan. If the customer prescribes particular problem-solving processes, tools or systems, the organization uses them unless the customer agrees otherwise.
