Hong Kong Design Manual: Barrier Free Access 2008 (2025 Edition) D9: Corridors, lobbies and paths: manoeuvring space, channel covers, gratings, protrusions, controlled passages and headroom

What does D9 require?

Corridors, lobbies and paths must be designed so that everyone can move through the building safely and on their own. Clear width is at least 1050 mm; within 3500 mm of any dead end (a corridor, lobby or path that a person with a disability can leave in one direction only) there is a 1500 mm by 1500 mm space; a lobby within a corridor is at least 1200 mm long excluding door swings; both sides of every building entrance have a level area at least 1500 mm wide extending 1200 mm past the door swings; lobbies that lead only to a staircase are excepted. Channel covers on footpaths sit flush with holes no larger than 20 mm; grating slots are at most 13 mm wide and run across the line of travel; appliances, fixtures and fittings may not stand out more than 90 mm from the wall within the height band the Division sets; controlled passages need an accessible alternative and headroom must be kept. The Best Practice Section covers wider corridors and resting places.
