Hong Kong Design Manual: Barrier Free Access 2008 (2025 Edition) D5: Ramps: width, landings, running slope and length limits, handrails, kerbs and surface

What does D5 require?

Ramps of appropriate design are required at every change of level not served by an accessible lift or lifting mechanism. A ramp is at least 1050 mm wide, has a clear 1500 mm by 1500 mm space at its head and foot onto which no door may swing, and is no steeper than 1 in 12 except for minor rises (1 in 10 for a rise of up to 150 mm over at most 1500 mm, or 1 in 8 for a rise of up to 75 mm over at most 600 mm), and such minor-rise ramps may not be combined. The Division's further obligatory items cover handrails to Division 8, kerbs or protection at the edges, tactile warning strips and a firm slip-resistant surface. The Best Practice Section recommends gentler gradients and intermediate landings.
