Adaptive leadership is an iterative process of three activities: observing events and patterns as objectively as possible, which means stepping from the dance floor up to the balcony to watch oneself and others while the action unfolds; interpreting what is observed by forming several hypotheses about what is actually happening, treating every interpretation as a hypothesis; and designing interventions grounded in what was observed and interpreted, aimed at the adaptive challenge identified, then observing again. Each activity builds on the last and the cycle repeats, refining observations, interpretations and interventions.
