The Work of Leadership gives six principles: get on the balcony (see the patterns while in the action); identify the adaptive challenge (what values, habits and loyalties must change, who must learn what); regulate distress (a holding environment, the right pace, and the leader's own presence and poise; direction, protection and order provided in the service of adaptive work rather than to restore comfort); maintain disciplined attention (keep people focused on the tough issues rather than the diversions of work avoidance, and use conflict as a source of learning); give the work back to people (put responsibility where it belongs, support rather than control, resist the reflex to solve); and protect voices of leadership from below (the people who raise the hard questions, often at the margins, are the ones authority silences first and the organization most needs).
The graph holds this control, the 0 it maps to, and the evidence behind each claim, over MCP and REST.
