Leading adaptive change is political work: expand informal authority through relationships, early wins and attention to interests outside the challenge; find allies, including unlikely ones, and understand their loyalties; stay connected to the opposition, whose concerns hold information and whose hostility engagement lowers; manage the authority figures above by keeping them informed and prepared; take responsibility for casualties, the people who lose in the change, treating them humanely; and shield and draw in those who dissent, which carry the perspectives the majority is avoiding.
