Goleman Emotional Intelligence Leadership Framework S4: Democratic style (Democratic in Primal Leadership)

What does S4 require?

The leader forges consensus through participation, in a phrase what do you think: giving people a voice in decisions, listening, building flexibility and responsibility and generating ideas; it rests on collaboration, team leadership and communication. It fits building buy-in or consensus and getting valuable input from competent team members; it fails with people who lack the competence or information to contribute, and in a crisis. Its climate effect is positive (flexibility .28, responsibility .23, standards .22, rewards .42, clarity .35, commitment .26) though less than the authoritative style, and the cost may be meeting after meeting and staff who feel confused and without a leader.
