An after-hours service supports, rather than replaces, the patient's own GP. It advises patients to return to their regular practice for ongoing care, reports each contact back, and avoids taking on continuing management of chronic conditions, repeat prescribing or opioid therapy that belongs with the regular GP. Where a patient's needs are not appropriate for the service, for example frequent after-hours use for routine matters or a need for continuing care the patient has no regular GP to provide, the service helps the patient find and transfer to a regular practice and shares the relevant information with consent.
