After-hours Services Standard 1 Access to care and continuity with the regular practice – Australia RACGP Standards for After-hours and Medical Deputising Services (5th edition)

Australia RACGP Standards for After-hours and Medical Deputising Services (5th edition) AHS1.2: Responsive system for patient care: the service can provide longer consultations when needed, runs a triage system so urgent needs are recognised and prioritised, and its recorded phone message tells callers to ring 000 in a life-threatening emergency

What does AHS1.2 require?

After-hours demand is unpredictable and sometimes critical. The service builds flexibility into its roster so a practitioner can spend longer with a complex or deteriorating patient. It has a documented triage system that call handlers and clinicians apply, with criteria for what is urgent, target response times by urgency and clear escalation to a clinician or to emergency services. The recorded message that callers hear advises them to call 000 in a life-threatening emergency.
