After-hours Services Standard 1 Access to care and continuity with the regular practice – Australia RACGP Standards for After-hours and Medical Deputising Services (5th edition)

Australia RACGP Standards for After-hours and Medical Deputising Services (5th edition) AHS1.3: Safety of the service team: the service provides a safe environment for all team members during the after-hours period, including those who travel to visits, with risk assessment of locations, drivers or chaperones, check-in procedures, duress alerts and the right to decline an unsafe visit

What does AHS1.3 require?

Night work alone in unfamiliar places is hazardous. The service assesses the risks to its team in the after-hours period, at the clinic and on the road, and puts controls in place: screening of visit requests for known risks, drivers or chaperones for home visits, GPS tracking with check-in procedures and a response when a practitioner cannot be reached, duress alarms, secure parking and lighting at premises, and a clear right for any team member to decline or withdraw from an unsafe situation with the service arranging alternative care. Incidents are reported and reviewed.
