Before any structural change that will affect how GMOs are contained in the facility, the applicant has to either (a) ask the Regulator in writing to suspend the certification, or (b) ask the Regulator in writing to vary the certified area so dealings can carry on in a part of the facility the changes do not touch. The guideline gives as an example a variation to partition the facility temporarily, keeping GMOs contained at one end while the other is modified, followed by a further variation to restore any area removed once the work is complete.
