Before any structural changes that may affect how GM animals are contained, the applicant must ask the Regulator in writing either (a) to suspend the certification or (b) to vary the certified area so dealings can carry on in a part the changes do not touch. The guideline suggests, for example, a variation that temporarily partitions the facility so GM animals are held at one end while the other is modified, followed by a further variation to restore the removed area once the work is done.
