Standard 5: Comprehensive Care – Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition

Australia National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards Second Edition 5.29-5.30: A system for caring for patients with cognitive impairment or at risk of delirium incorporates best-practice recognition, prevention, treatment and management including the Delirium Clinical Care Standard, manages antipsychotic and psychoactive medicines per best practice and legislation, and clinicians use it with patients, carers and families to individualise care and minimise distress

What does 5.29-5.30 require?

Services treating people with delirium or cognitive impairment, or at risk of delirium, must run a care system that builds early recognition, prevention, treatment and management into the care plan, drawing on the national delirium clinical care standard, and that governs antipsychotic and other psychoactive medicines by best practice and law. Clinicians must use the system to recognise, prevent, treat and manage impairment and must work with the patient, their carers and family to understand the person and put in place individual strategies that reduce anxiety and distress.
