Standard 9: Specimen collection – Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027)

Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027) 9.06: Optimising specimen collection: keep consumables available, in date and easy to find and use, have the collection workforce maintain specimen integrity through correct preparation, collection, packaging and transport, and have processes for inadequately labelled specimens and specimen integrity failures

What does 9.06 require?

Good collection depends on consumables that are to hand, in date and simple to find and use; on collectors who keep each specimen fit for testing by preparing the patient properly, collecting correctly, packaging securely and transporting under the right conditions; and on defined handling for specimens that arrive inadequately labelled or with their integrity compromised.
