Standard 9: Specimen collection – Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027)

Australia National Pathology Standards (First Edition 2027) 9.03: Recognising acute deterioration and escalating care: implement processes to respond promptly when a patient's physical or cognitive state deteriorates acutely, have referral pathways and escalation processes matched to the identified risks, keep collectors' skills current in recognising and responding to deterioration, and notify the requester or responsible provider when a patient's care is escalated

What does 9.03 require?

Collectors are backed up when a patient suddenly becomes unwell. There is a procedure for responding at once to acute physical or cognitive deterioration; referral pathways and escalation steps match the risks of the service; collectors keep up the skills to notice and respond to deterioration; and the requester or responsible clinician is told when a patient's care has had to be escalated.

What else in your programme already covers this

This control maps to 1 controls across 1 other frameworks. If you already hold one of them, the evidence you collected for it is the starting point here rather than new work.

  • 8.06-8.09 Escalation protocols specify agreed vital sign and mental state triggers, emergency assistance criteria, unmanaged pain or distress and the worry or concern of workforce, patients, carers and families; patients, carers and families can escalate care directly; the workforce has mechanisms to escalate and call for emergency assistance; and the workforce uses them

Every mapping shown was judged rather than inferred from wording similarity, and the ones that failed review are published too. See the coverage reports and what was rejected.
