A heating appliance and its components within a building, including an open fireplace, chimney or similar, must be installed to withstand the temperatures the appliance generates, so that it does not heat any building element to a level that affects its physical or mechanical properties or function, and so that hot combustion products do not escape through the walls of the components or discharge where they could spread fire to nearby combustible materials or let smoke enter nearby windows, ventilation inlets and the like. Verification Method H7V1 confirms heat-resistant materials (over 600 degrees C) or heat-tolerant materials (150 to 600 degrees C) by testing a sample at the maximum operating temperature for at least 96 hours, after which it must show no visible cracks, delamination, linear distortion beyond 10 mm per metre or surface deterioration, and the surrounding building elements must keep their function. Deemed-to-Satisfy route: H7D5, a domestic solid fuel burning appliance installed to AS/NZS 2918, or a heating appliance to Housing Provisions Part 12.4 (hearths, masonry or concrete open fireplaces, clearances and flue heights). Tasmania adds emission limits for solid-fuel appliances.
