General diving work is done only by people holding a training organisation certificate showing the AS/NZS 2815 competencies relevant to the type of work (other than incidental and limited scientific diving) and with sound knowledge and skill in diving physics, equipment and air supply, decompression tables or computers, dive planning, communication, safe methods, physiology, emergency procedures and first aid; incidental diving requires that knowledge, at least 15 logged hours (8 hours 20 minutes within the depth band) and in-water supervision by a qualified diver; limited scientific diving requires the knowledge and, for non-residents, 60 logged hours; appointed supervisors hold the r 171 qualification and relevant experience. The PCBU sees written evidence of each worker's and supervisor's competence before allowing the work and keeps it for at least 1 year after the work or last supervision.
