Chapter 7 Implementing control measures: testing, policies, training and maintenance – Australia Model Code of Practice Managing the Risks of Biological Hazards at Work

Australia Model Code of Practice Managing the Risks of Biological Hazards at Work 7: Implement controls in a deliberate sequence, managing additional risks they create (aerosolisation by air movement, trip hazards from fans), trial them where time permits to confirm suitability, operation and absence of new risks, let workers adjust, check with workers often and supervise implementation, and adjust as needed

What does 7 require?

Controls should be implemented in a deliberate sequence that maximises their effectiveness and minimises unintended risks: ventilation is valuable, yet the air movement it creates can aerosolise biological hazards and raise exposure, and devices such as fans can add trip hazards, so the PCBU assesses and manages any additional risk when planning and implementing controls. Where time allows, a trial period helps assess effectiveness and make adjustments, confirming the controls suit the workplace, operate as intended and introduce no new risks such as heat stress from PPE; workers are given time to adjust before effectiveness is judged, and during the trial the PCBU checks frequently with workers on how the controls are working and supervises to ensure they are implemented effectively, identifying modifications needed.
