Fixed ladders should be installed to AS 1657. Cages on ladders steeper than 75 degrees do not stop falls and can worsen injuries and hinder rescue, so such ladders should have a permanent or temporary fall arrest system using anchorage lines or rails. The slope should be between 70 and 75 degrees and never overhang the climber; above 75 degrees provide a safe system such as a permanent fall arrest system or harness with double lanyard. A specific rescue procedure should be developed for ladder cages, with rescue training before the ladder is used.
