When on a ladder, keep three points of contact (climbing: two feet and one hand or one foot and two hands; working: two feet plus a hand or thighs against the ladder), carry tools in a belt or pouch, do only light work with one-handed tools, keep others from underneath and off the ladder, do not straddle it, and wear slip-resistant footwear. Do not use metal or metal-reinforced ladders on live electrical work or do hot work such as arc welding or oxy cutting from a ladder. Without additional fall protection, do not use a stepladder near an open edge, penetration or railing; over-reach (keep the torso within the stiles); use two-handed power tools or high-leverage tools; face away from the ladder; stand closer than 900 mm to the top of a single or extension ladder; or stand above the second tread below a stepladder's top plate (except three-rung stepladders or working through an overhead opening that gives support). Extra precautions are needed in doorways and access areas, near powerlines, in wet or windy weather, and near traffic.
