Key practices for compressed and liquefied gas cylinders: regularly check cylinders, regulators, hoses and pipes for leaks and dents; store cylinders upright so the safety device works; secure them against dislodgement; move them with trolleys or gas cages; keep the valve closed when not in use; keep heat and ignition sources away even from non-flammable gases; and store outdoors or in very well ventilated areas. Cylinders should have a bursting disc and liquid petroleum gas cylinders an operating spring-loaded relief valve. For a small leak, close the valve if safe, put on suitable PPE before locating the leak, ventilate, switch off air conditioning to avoid spreading gas, and consider breathing apparatus for toxic gas; for a large release evacuate, ventilating and isolating ignition sources first if safe, and contact the supplier or emergency services. Transport and storage of small gas cylinders in vehicles must be managed, and Australian Standards give further detail.
