Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace
Section 4: Controlling risks – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace 4.1e: 4.1 Provide, fit and maintain suitable PPE as the last line (r 44)

PPE is anything worn to minimise risk, such as overalls, aprons, footwear, gloves, chemical resistant glasses, face shields, respirators and air-supplied equipment. If PPE is used the PCBU must ensure it is selected to minimise risk and suits the work and hazard, is of suitable size and fit and reasonably comfortable; is maintained, repaired and replaced so it keeps working, including clean and hygienic and in good order; and, where directing work, give information, training and instruction in correct use, wearing, storage and maintenance. Workers must use it as instructed and not misuse it. PPE should be a last resort or interim protection, but for high risk activities such as spray painting, abrasive blasting and some emergency response it should always supplement higher controls. Observe workers using it: discarded PPE suggests it does not fit or hinders the work. Match gloves to the chemical and use air-fed full-face respirators for spraying isocyanates rather than half-face.
