Section 4: Controlling risks – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals in the Workplace 4.2c: 4.2 Keep hazardous chemicals stable (r 356)

The PCBU must ensure so far as reasonably practicable that hazardous chemicals do not become unstable, decompose or change so as to create a different hazard or significantly increase the risk of an existing one. The PCBU must maintain the recommended proportions of ingredients and components such as phlegmatisers, diluents, solvents, wetting agents, desensitisers and inhibitors, and keep chemicals within any control temperature range. Follow the manufacturer or SDS instructions, including stabilising ingredients and keeping chemicals and packaging dry unless packages are moisture proof. The duty does not apply where change is part of a deliberate process or a reaction in a manifesting process without risk. A chemical past its expiry date should not be used but be disposed of in line with the manufacturer's instructions and local laws.
