Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work
Chapter 1 Introduction: duty holders, the risk management process, consultation, information, training, instruction and supervision – Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work

Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work 1.3: Provide information, training, instruction and supervision suited to the work, its noise risks and the controls in place, delivered understandably by a competent person, covering responsibilities, how noise harms hearing, the effects of hearing loss and tinnitus, the noisy tasks and likely exposure, how to use controls, how to select, fit, wear, maintain and store hearing protectors, how to report defects and concerns, and the purpose of audiometric testing

What does 1.3 require?

Under section 19 of the WHS Act and Regulation 39 a PCBU must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the information, training, instruction and supervision needed to protect people from the risks of the work are provided; what is provided must be suitable and adequate for the nature of the work, the risks at the time and the controls in place, and delivered in a way the recipient can readily understand. Workers must be trained and skilled for their tasks, and training should be given by a competent person. For workers who may be exposed to hazardous noise, training and information should cover the health and safety responsibilities of each party, how noise affects hearing, the effect of hearing loss and tinnitus on quality of life at work and socially, the tasks that can cause hearing loss and the likely exposure, how to use the noise controls, how to select, fit, wear, maintain and store PPE and hearing protectors, how to report defects in protectors or control equipment and raise concerns, and the purpose and nature of audiometric testing. Specific supervision duties also apply where workers use or handle hazardous chemicals.
