Section 19 of the WHS Act places the primary duty on the PCBU: get rid of the risk that hazardous noise creates, and where that cannot reasonably practicably be done, reduce it as far as is reasonably practicable. Regulations 56 to 58 sharpen the duty. The exposure standard is an eight-hour equivalent continuous A-weighted level (LAeq,8h) of 85 dB(A) or a C-weighted peak (LC,peak) of 140 dB(C), each measured under AS/NZS 1269.1. The PCBU manages the risk of noise-related hearing loss and makes sure no worker's exposure goes beyond that standard, and provides audiometric testing to any worker who regularly has to wear hearing protection against noise above it. Consultation duties toward workers, and toward other duty holders, sit alongside.
