Before deciding to vary or avoid cover under the Insurance Contracts Act, the insurer sends a show cause letter that encloses the relevant information, sets out the inconsistencies between what was disclosed at application and what was later obtained, invites an explanation and further material, explains the possible effect on cover and gives a response deadline; any response is considered before the decision. A decision to vary or avoid is then confirmed in writing with the reasoning, the effect on cover, the right to copies of the information relied on within ten business days, the right to ask for a review, and how to complain.
