Section 3: communicating with customers – Australia Life Insurance Code of Practice (CALI Life Code)

Australia Life Insurance Code of Practice (CALI Life Code) 3.1-3.3: Use the customer's preferred communication method and respect who owns the policy

The insurer communicates by the method the customer prefers where practical, unless the Code or law requires writing, and satisfies a communication duty by reaching whichever of the applicant, the owner of the policy or group policy, the insured life, a third-party beneficiary or a representative is the right recipient. A customer who is not the policy owner does not have personal information shared with the owner without consent beyond what an application, policy or claim requires, consistent with privacy law. Where an employer or superannuation trustee owns the policy the insurer communicates with that owner, who communicates with the member.
