An audit program and procedures provide for periodic OHSMS audits by a competent person to determine whether the system conforms to what was planned for OHS management (the Standard's requirements included), has been put in place and kept up properly, and works in meeting the policy and the objectives and targets for continual improvement of OHS, and to give management and employees the audit results. The program and its schedule reflect how much each activity matters for OHS and what earlier audits found; the procedures set scope, frequency, methods, competencies, and who does what in carrying out audits and reporting their results.
