Metallic cold water services are limited to grey cast iron fittings, copper pipes and fittings, copper alloy fittings, ductile iron and stainless steel; firefighting services may also use galvanized steel. Further limits: ductile iron must be lined and externally coated; cast iron must be cement-mortar lined and externally coated; galvanized pipe (hot-dipped to at least 300 g/m2 inside and out) is allowed only for above-ground non-drinking systems, except buried galvanized fire hydrant or booster riser pipe under AS 2419.1, which must be heavy thickness to DN 80 and at least medium above that, no more than 1.5 m below ground and wrapped in petrolatum tape; stainless pipe is joined only with dezincification-resistant copper alloy or stainless fittings; stainless material needs a pitting resistance equivalent number of 22 or more; and copper pipe is limited to Types A, B and C.
